Thriving at Work: Why AI Is Key to Employee Performance

What’s the best way for leaders to foster strong performance? And how can they tell if their efforts are truly paying off? Many companies focus on metrics like engagement scores or financial results (which are important) but at Microsoft, they take a broader view.

“Thriving has become the North Star for how we understand employees,” says Dawn Klinghoffer, Microsoft VP of People Analytics. “We define thriving as being empowered and energized to do meaningful work. Are people excited to come to work every day? Are they looking forward to the opportunities ahead?”

To measure this, Microsoft runs the Employee Signals survey, a biannual, company-wide poll. Recent results revealed not only the tangible benefits of thriving employees, but also a key catalyst: access to AI tools. Employees with AI support reported higher energy, engagement, and the ability to focus on meaningful, impactful work, demonstrating that technology can be a powerful driver of both performance and satisfaction.
